6代目となるGT-Rは、2007年のモーターショーで発表。このR35からスカイラインという名前がつかなくなりましたが、初代後期型GT-R（KPGC10型）以来伝統のトランクを分離した2ドアクーペデザインや4代目スカイラインの2000GT（GC110型）以来続いた「スカイラインGTの象徴」とされる丸型4灯テールランプなどを踏襲するが、開発と設計はスカイラインに無縁で独立した固有の車種である。
