A70型よりセリカから独立、日本国内でも北米仕様と同じ「SUPRA」という車名を採用。発売当時のキャッチコピーは「TOYOTA 3000GT」であり、1960年代の名車トヨタ・2000GTをイメージしていた。ソアラと共通のプラットフォーム（ただし補強は少ない）を使用し、当初の主なエンジンは、2Lは1G-EU、1G-GEU、そのツインターボ版1G-GTEU、3Lターボの7M-GTEUであった。

TOYOTA SUPRA First 1986-1993

It is independent from Celica from the A 70 type, adopting the same name "SUPRA" as the North America specification even in Japan. The catch phrase at the time of release was "TOYOTA 3000 GT", which was image of the famous car Toyota 2000 GT of the 1960s. Using the same platform as Soarer (but with little reinforcement), the original main engines were 2G 1G-EU, 1G-GEU, its twin turbo version 1G-GTEU, 3L turbo's 7M-GTEU.
