1981年7月にモデルチェンジ。車台はカリーナやコロナと共通。先代より一層スペシャルティカーの要素を強めて登場した。キャッチコピーは「世界、新CELICA」。ソアラが誕生したことにより、こちらはXXシリーズ（GA60/MA60型）も含めて、ターゲットを従来より若い世代へシフトしている。直線的なラインで鋭いウェッジシェイプを描く4気筒系ボディ（ショートノーズ・ショートホイールベース）は先代同様にリフトバック(LB)とクーペの2種類。

Model change in July 1981. Chassis is common with carina and corona. It appeared to strengthen the elements of the specialty car more than the previous generation. Catch copy is "World, New CELICA". Due to the birth of Soarer, this is shifting the target to the younger generation than before, including the XX series (GA 60 / MA 60 type). As for the 4-cylinder type body (Short nose · short wheelbase) which draws a sharp wedge shape with a straight line, it is two kinds of lift back (LB) and coupe like the predecessor.
