1978年にモデルチェンジ。この代より「トヨペット・コロナ」から「トヨタ・コロナ」となる。先代モデルのイメージを残したデザインと なるが、バンパーが売れ筋グレードでは金属製から樹脂製に変更される。デザインは5代目のイメージを継承したが、当時流行の角形4灯式ヘッドライトに（バンとセダンのタクシー仕様は丸型4灯）、衝撃吸収バンパーも新設計のウレタン樹脂製に改められた。
