日産自動車に吸収合併されたプリンス自動車工業が、日産に吸収合併される以前から次世代の前輪駆動（FF）車として開発されていた車種である。日産に吸収合併された後も旧プリンス出身の社員を中心に、当時の旧プリンスの開発拠点であった東京都杉並区荻窪の荻窪事業所にて開発が続行され、1970年に日産初の量産前輪駆動（FF）車として発売された。イラストは、1200X-1R クーペ。
