スカイラインGT-Rの後継車種であが、エンジン型式では、1969年-1973年が第1世代、1989年-2002年が第2世代、本モデルは第3世代となる。車両型式は第2世代最終モデルが属する10代目スカイラインの基本型式R34に続くR35で、スカイラインシリーズとして11代目のV35型以降とは異系列である。
